When Yuan was still our only baby, I used to teach him with the “ABC”, numbers from 1 to 10, basic colors & shapes, and names of different animals with the aid of posters, books and CD’s of Barney, Dora the Explorer and Elmo. At age two and a half, he can recite the alphabet, can spell out words (though he can’t read words yet), can count till 60 and even recognize numbers up to two digits, can differentiate colors, can draw the basic shapes (circle, triangle, square and rectangle), he can also name animals. However, it’s a different case with Gabee (my younger son), as he is usually destructed by the presence of Yuan. He didn’t even care what I am saying because he always wants to play with his kuya (elder brother). When I try to teach him with the basic colors and numbers from 1 to 5, he seems not interested. But when Yuan recites the numbers, the ABC’s, colors, shapes and names of animals, he tries to repeat them. I suppose, he grasp it as a form of game with his kuya.
As a mom, I try to find ways on how I can teach both of my sons according to the particular style they need. And I discovered a fun way to teach Gabee to differentiate colors and it’s also a fun game too with the whole family. Last Sunday night, we ate the M&M chocolate candy that my sister has given. I told them that whoever says the right color first will get the candy I’m holding. And if no one gets it right, the candy will be given to daddy and mommy. We also found out that night, that Gabee can distinguish the blue and green from other colors. Believe me, it was really amusing and exciting experience we had with our kids.
It’s a great activity for the family and we’ll surely do it again. You can also try it to your kids too.
How about you? Do you have family activities too? Can you share it with us?
